The Covid-19 Survivor Diaries Documentary Film Series

An In-depth look into how Covid-19 is impacting Americans across the country and why

Hi! I'm Morgana. I am a humanitarian photographer and filmmaker. My husband, Jaco, is a South African helicopter pilot. In 2014, we were living in Liberia, West Africa when the world's largest Ebola outbreak erupted. I helped PCI Media share Ebola survivor stories through radio, TV, and social media reaching nearly 10 million people. It helped curb the spread of the virus by driving change in attitudes and behaviors. So, when Covid-19 started spreading where we lived in 2020, New York City, we started interviewing and photographing Covid-19 survivors around us. Then, we both lost our jobs because of the pandemic and that gave us the opportunity to dedicate all of our time to documenting the stories of Covid-19 survivors. Over the summer of 2020, we started doing short road trips up and down the east coast to interview survivors in other states. That inspired us to drive across the country. So, we moved out of our New York apartment and moved into a 19’ Airstream Caravel so we could safely and cheaply travel across the U.S. But, after traveling for a couple months we decided that wasn’t enough — the project didn’t feel complete until we interviewed survivors from every state. So, we are now on a mission to document stories of Covid-19 survivors in all 50 states in America by the end of 2021 and produce a documentary film series about their stories. We’re smack in the middle of that journey right now trying to film and edit and pay our bills in the process. It’s the best and hardest thing we’ve ever done but there’s nothing else we’d rather be doing during this moment in history.
